This year, we’re talking about two ends of the spectrum: Ichiro’s Chichibu 2025 and Octomore 14.1, 14.2, and 14.3.
One is clean, precise, complex, and rounded on the finish. The other is like getting hit in the face with a roaring barbecue fire… in a great, delicious way.
Chichibu: Small, Quiet… and Better Than It Should Be
Chichibu is one of those bottles people look at and ask, what is that cool-looking thing?
The 2025 US-exclusive Chichibu is built from just 16 barrels. That’s small. Once it’s gone, it’s gone, and there’s nothing anybody can do about it.
Distilled from 100% lightly peated malted barley, fermented for 100 hours in Mizunara oak washbacks, and run through copper pot stills, this is the makings of a varsity whiskey.
Then they aged it 5–9 years across a mix of ex-IPA, ex-imperial stout, and ex-bourbon casks. Now you’ve got whisky with real complexity and dynamic flavor.
Flavor profile:
Candied orange, dried pineapple, vanilla pastry cream.
There’s also a subtle hop bitterness in there that gives it the feel of a well-built barrel-aged ale—tight, balanced, and not overly sweet.
No coloring. Non-chill filtered. Bottled at 52.5%.
Even the label’s got some personality—Mark Twain sitting there with a glass, a Japanese product truly made for the US market.
A bottle like this is for the pro who thinks he’s seen it all.

Octomore 14 Series: This Is Where People Get Wowed
Now we go the other direction.
Bruichladdich makes Octomore, and every year they basically ask, “How much smoke is too much?” Then they say, “Ok double it.”
Octomore 14.1 – 128.9 PPM
The “light” one. Which is ridiculous. I want you to understand that an empty sample glass will fill a room with smoky currents.
Flavor profile:
Big smoke, vanilla, citrus, tang.
It’s sharp, clean, and still hits harder than you would ever expect.
Octomore 14.2 – 128.9 PPM
Same peat explosion, but now aged in wine and sherry casks.
Flavor profile:
Peat, dark fruit, spice.
Now you’ve got wine casks layered in with sherry casks, and it stops being just smoke and starts turning into big flavor with jammy finishes.
Octomore 14.3 – 214.2 PPM
This one doesn’t care if you like it.
Flavor profile:
Earth, ash, grain.
Farm-grown barley from Islay, full terroir, full intensity. This is the one that makes people either fall in love... or go right back to never drinking big boy Scotch again
