Terroir: Re Manfredi’s Vineyard of the Serpents is a 15-acre hillside vineyard sitting at 1600 feet in elevation. Soils are made up entirely of well-drained volcanic matter. The vineyard is made up of two separate parcels; one containing 40-year old vines densely planted and pruned using the Guyot method. The second seven-acre parcel was planted in 2001 and contains extremely dense plantings of 5,000 vines per hectare.
Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested, sorted and macerated on the skins for 15-20 days followed by fermentation in French Allier oak casks. The wine is aged for 12 months in 50% new and 50% 2nd-use oak and bottled without filtration. With excellent tobacco flavors and deep, dark fruit, this is a wine that will change and improve for another decade and easily run for another decade beyond that. 10,000 bottles produced.
Re Manfredi “Serpara” Aglianico del Vulture has been awarded the prestigious Tre Bicchieri award from Gambero Rosso for vintages 2003, 2010.

Date: Thursday, March 5, 2020"Bright deep red. A knockout nose combines strawberry, minerals, violet, leather and herbs. Rich, plush and spicy, offering a superb combination of ripeness and energy to its musky flavors of raspberry, grilled meat, minerals, leather and blood orange. Long on personality and fine-grained, but not at all candied or sweet. Aged roughly 24 months in French oak barriques." -

Date: Thursday, October 10, 2019"The 2015 Aglianico del Vulture Superiore Serpara shows much of that earthiness that you get in the regular Aglianico del Vulture (from the 2016 vintage) that I also reviewed here. However, this wine is more constructed and more contemporary, if you wish, with deeper layers of soft richness. Bold black fruit, plum and dried currant are followed by earthy tones, spice and that signature of volcanic ash you can always expect in wines from the Vulture in Southern Italy. Re Manfredi has created a very nice set of new releases."
