Nicolas was established in 1822 when it opened its first three stores in Paris. Until that time, customers who wanted to buy wine brought their jugs to the winemaker, who filled them from a barrel. Nicolas was the first to offer wine in a glass bottle sealed with a cork. This was a revolutionary concept and the beginning of the wine bottling industry in France. Today there are over 400 stores throughout Europe.
