Gordon & MacPhail began in 1895 as a grocery business; located in the heart of Scotland’s Speyside region, it featured products from around the world, including specialty teas, coffees, wines and whiskies. Founders James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail, joined early on by John Urquhart, shortly came to specialize in Speyside’s single malts, with Urquhart, who took over the company following the founders’ deaths, developing impressive skills as a master of malt whisky maturation. The company today remains in the Urquhart family. This 25-year-old is from the Mortlach distillery, considered one of the undisputed stars of Speyside, known for its technique of “2.81 times distillation” rather than the traditional two times. Finished in first-fill and refill sherry casks, this is rich, full single malt with herbal aromas, raisins and orange marmalade on the palate, and lingering charred oak on the fiish.
